I went to the new Star Trek film yesterday and it was good!  Everyone should go see it, whether a previous fan or not.

Storyline was reasonable.  For Star Trek.  ^_^  It was even a semi-logical ret-con.  The opening was amazing and made me and my friend both sniffle and go teary over the sheer heroism.
Kirk was all right; still not going on my list of favorites any time soon, but not terribly annoying.  Mini-Spock was adorable, though I could see years of psychiatric treatment coming out of his childhood if Vulcans went into that sort of thing.  (Mini-Kirk was a twerp.)  Seeing Spock shoot down the high muckamucks at the Science Academy was very satisfying.  Hm...McCoy was generally yay and his grand scheme for getting Kirk aboard the Enterprise was hilarious.  I had forgotten that Sulu fenced...  Chekhov!  So cute!  All curls and accent and cleverness!  Definitely my favorite.  Oooh, Scotty, I hadn't known that Nicholas Angel, sorry, Simon Pegg was playing him.  It was awesome.  ^_^
Story was pretty strong and had some really cool bits.  It was awesome to see Mr. Nimoy.

McCoy, Sulu and especially Chekhov made that movie for me. I knew they'd make sure they had a good Kirk and Spock - I was worried that they'd be less bothered about my favourite nerdlier three - but they got them so awesome! Particularly Chekhov :D

Having just seen the movie, I definitely concur. :)

There is much love for this Spock and Kirk, though I must admit I only know minute amounts about the old ones. Chekhov is my favorite too. "I know how to do this! I can do this! Out of my way, I can do this!" Heeheehee...

Must be that accent thing. It keeps getting me at every turn.

I liked how the bad guy was more of a tragic character that you could empathize with.

And yeah, this is the second movie that had me tearing up in the first ten minutes. The other was the first Chronicles of Narnia.

Yep!

Still not feeling a lot of sympathy for the bad guy, because emotional trauma doesn't justify that much death, ever. But yeah, I understand.

Yeah. I know what you mean. I had a bit of the same thing that made me tear up at the beginning though. *SPOILER FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVEN'T SEEN* I guess it was Kirk's wife giving birth and the bad guy's wife being pregnant and losing one of the partner's and me and Kiwi being in a position where that could happen makes me squeamish/empathetic.

Yeah, the beginning had me almost crying too. All three times I've seen it.

Is it me or are Simon Scotty and that weird little alien engineer thing totally gettin' it on?

Glad you don't like Kirk. Leaves him free for me.

Um...
Um... I was completely happy with my brain not going there.

All yours. I imagine you'll have to beat off the fangirls.

I think the beginning of the movie got to me more the 2nd time around than the 1st...maybe because I knew what was going to happen?

As a die-hard Trekker (started when I was 5) it is so weird and awesome to see Trek being regarded as cool again.

It was amazing... I'm a big British navy lit buff (Napoleanic wars=awesome) and it reminded me so much of a scene from that era.

I don't know that it's cool exactly, but perhaps a little more mainstream? Star Trek was one of the first things my brothers and I were ever allowed to watch on tv.

Did you know Captain Picard is based on Horatio Hornblower? No joke. So not only is he Patrick Stewart, a Shakespearian actor, he's Hornblower as well! What more is there to want?

I've got to say (having finished the series), Picard's a whole lot less screwed up in the head than Hornblower... I like my Aubrey-Maturin books a lot better.
