hsavinien: (Fear me)

Sooo, I just finished watching Doctor Who season 4 last night!  And there was much excited squeaking, but no posting, due to a case of the punies and a brotherly English project being typed.

Regarding the Doctor and his companions, all gathered together.  Awesome!  I've always liked the freedom of crossover between the various spinoffs (though I have yet to track down the Sarah Jane Adventures) and it was absolutely brilliant that they all got pulled in like that.  After all, the end of the universe(s) is as of much concern to Torchwood Three and UNIT as to anyone else, if not moreso.  The Final Awesome Showdown of Awesome versus the Daleks (aka OhSHIT,notagain) was really, really cool.  I was glad to finally have the explanation for Randomly Appearing Rose all through season four ("Turn Left" was a seriously traumatic episode for me, by the way, especially with the mention of Ianto and Gwen dying on the Sontaran battleship while Jack went on to face the Sontaran homeworld).  Rose was pretty cool.  Big Effing Gun time was well-placed, especially in the saving of Donna's family.  Her reunion with the Doctor was all sniffly, but in an appropriate way. Um.  *shrug* There was Rose and she was cool.  It happens.

Rose's World/Pete's World/Ricky's World (whichever you prefer) was a good turn-up.  I like Mickey's characterization (poor boy, had to abandon his gun) throughout.  The alt. world was good for him, as it seemed like it was going to be when he stayed.  He and Jackie work pretty well together, which says a lot for the continuity of their friendship.  Mickey's interaction with Jack was, as usual, quite amusing.  I swear, he must be one of the few eligible beings in existence to whom Captain Jack is not attracted.  But the "Mickey Mouse!" "Captain Cheescake!" "That's Captain Beefcake." "Enough with the hugging already." exchange made me giggle, and I need a show that can do that while the effing universe is about to be destroyed.

Jackie has grown so much.  I was really pleased with her.

Distinct lack of Jake! *pouts*  He's so cute and pointy and blond and heavily armed and snarky!

Sarah Jane and her son (and John Smith and K-9) were just cute and plucky and sweet and so very much the best of humanity (and...y'know...machinery).  I need to see more of them, definitely.

I feel sorry for Ianto and Gwen (and slightly annoyed that they didn't get to play, though it was really about the Doctor's Companions above all and they don't qualify.)  But being stuck inside Torchwood by the time-field (*pets Tosh*) must have really sucked.  In other news: Ianto likes bad comedy!  *giggles*  And gets (understandably) slightly pissy at Jack for chatting up soldiers in bars.  I can't help but think of the red UNIT cap every time Martha shows up in an episode with Torchwood.  *snigger*

Jack...was a little weird, but understandably so.  His utter defeat when he figured out it was the Daleks is not entirely surprising, considering the traumatic crapshoot his life turned into the last time he faced them.  He wasn't as much fun as usual, but...there were moments like the previously mentioned meeting with Mickey that showed his old spark.  I can't decide if he was meant to have slightly domesticated from life with Ianto, been going DALEKTRAUMA, or still been in mourning for the loss of Tosh and Owen.

Martha was so strong, as usual.  Her mourning over what was happening and what she nearly had to do (re: the Osterhagen Key) along with her capability and stubbornness was tempered as always by her ties to her family and Tom (yay, pretty Tom!).

Donna.  Donna was amazing.  I've always kind of liked her as one of the Doctor's Companions.  She's broken enough that she needs the Doctor almost as much as he needs her, in a way that Rose and Jack did too, but Martha did not.  Martha's travels with the Doctor were really distinct from the others. They started out broken and their journeys with him fixed them to some extent, while Martha started out pretty whole and was nearly broken before she left.  Donna, however, despite her sense of her own uselessness was the salvation of all of them.  Of course.   Though she repeats over and over that she's just a "temp from Chiswick," her connection to the Doctor--the creation of the "human metacrisis" Doctor and herself as the "Doctor Donna" let her infuse all the clever, silly, bloody-minded, caring paradox of humanity into the salvation of the universe.  Besides, the temp from Chiswick is in good company with the London shopgirl and the prettyboy conman.  Frankly, I found her ending a lot more heart-wrenching than Rose's (original).  Rose got to keep the memories of how she'd grown and learned and become better, while Donna's had to be stripped.  It's a terrible fate to lose wonders like that, despite the pain of some of them.  And her chances of finding her nice, stuttering Lee MacAvoy again have dropped considerably...

Another wonderful Captain Jack moment...pondering what to do with three Doctors...

On the endings...  Rose, losing the Doctor again, but gaining someone who's almost him at the same time.  Looks like she came out all right.  Jackie's got Pete and baby Tony.  Torchwood's obviously got themselves a new doctor (Martha) and techie (Mickey)--interesting to see how that will go.  I was Displeased at Mickey biffing off back to the base world, and the indication that he didn't end up as very close friends with Jake.  Or more.  *pouts*  Darn BBC, quashing my fanthing mental pairings.  I hope her growth and deepening will stick with Donna, at least subconsciously.  She deserves it.  Her grand-dad Wilf is awesome.  *pats Doctor*  Off we go again.

For the edification of anyone who is at all interested in my writing, I have compiled a listing of all my LJ fiction, sorted by fanfiction/original, fandom, pairing(s), and length, and marked for rating with some warnings, if necessary.  It's stuck at the top of my journal page, right under the tags list, or can be found at this link.

OMG you and I have exactly the same brain waves regarding all the companions!!! How the Doctor fixed everyone: Rose, Jack, Mickey, Donna, etc, but broke Martha. He didn't mean to, but Martha never really needed him- she had things pretty much worked out for herself, thankyouverymuchDr.Jones. It's not that I was worried about the Doctor falling in love with her and OMG REPLACING ROSE HIS OTL EVAR! but he needs someone, and she didn't really need him to reach her full potential.

Rose's ending was upsetting, but essentially she got a Doctor that would be able to reciprocate her feelings- and having a relationship (and working for Torchwood) is better than a life where things will never just be fucking resolved and out in the open, even if you have a TARDIS.

Donna's ending BROKE ME. I almost cried. I never cry. And you know what? THAT SCENE? The "binaries"? ONE TAKE. Catherine Tate is my new favorite actress. Ever.

Agreed, needed more Torchwood, and more Jake. And more Wilf, but I always think things need more Wilf. Just saying.

OH SEASON FOUR WAS SO AWESOME. Now you just have to see the Christmas and Easter specials!!!

I also have never seen SJA- but I've heard it is lame. Just throwing it out there. I haven't actually seen it.

I'm going to shut up now, but should you ever want to have tea and discuss in depth, I'm totally game. And I has spoilers, but I will always put them under a cut, and I only put them on LJ, so you don't have to look if you don't want to.

I'm watching the Christmas Special at the moment (took me ages to track it down), but I haven't searched out the Easter one. Do you know if it's up on YouTube or someplace?

See, I am not the only one who thinks Jake is Win! Yah, Wilf is cute and spiffy. His bits in "Turn Left" were really good.

*shrug* Dunno about the SJA, but they look like they must be awfully cute, so I'll watch 'em.

I...think that clip was best left out, actually. Rose and the Doctor (mark 10.2) could do with the bit of relative settling down of only having to save one planet on a regular basis.

But yes, would be pleased to see your thoughts on everything.

Rose was broken? How so?

I got the impression Jack was just being Jack. And then he realised it was Daleks, and he knew he couldn't save his loved ones from that. It's not that he's domesticated by Ianto. More than he loves Ianto, and Gwen, and Owen and Tosh, and he's just lost Owen and Tosh, and now he's about to lose Gwen and especially Ianto, and he doesn't even get to die with them. He knows he's about to lose everything again, and it hurts.

Well, Rose was not broken so much as drifting. She had a reasonable life, but it wasn't going to ever make more of her or let her grow beyond what she already had.

Yeah, but it's Jack and he couldn't even be bothered to feel up Donna when she offered. The utter horrible defeat is just not in his usual mode (though, as I said, understandable). He just seemed a bit off to me is all, so I was speculating.
