I just watched Maurice, an older film set in just-pre-WWI England.  While the film is depressing at points, it is well acted and has a happy ending.  (Yes, I'm a sucker for them.)  I found the characters engaging and believable.

Things H. Savinien learned from watching Maurice:
  • It is always a bad sign when a gay man grows an unattractive mustache
  • English college men are/were under the impression that a "Platonic" male friendship implies chastity  *mrflsnort*
  • Cricket is, in fact, a very amusing sport to try to decipher from watching five minutes on film.  Also, the players wear tight white trousers
  • It's cute to watch your crush act silly in the rain when they don't know you're watching

Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! And I think Clive seems more sympathetic in the book because you get things from his perspective, which helps you understand him, at least.

^_^ Have you read his short story "What Does It Matter? A Morality"? It's awesome.
