Crowley and Aziraphale were both necessary…or else neither of them were.  Crowley hadn’t decided which.  He was leaning in favor of the former with all the powers self-interest could muster.  The point was that whichever it was, there be two of them, not one tagging about at loose ends.  Balance, the angel had called it as they muzzily drafted the first written version of the Arrangement, Aziraphale’s neat copperplate trailing off tipsily.  Crowley had nodded carefully, loosened shirt ties trailing unheeded through a puddle and staining a rich burgundy.  The word that had danced through his head, though, was ‘counterpoint.’

Ooh, I like that! Very good -- love the counterpoint of the ink and the winestain, and the musical referencing. (When my choir sings counterpoint, sometimes it's as a canon. And in this instance, counterpoint is canon.) ;D

Oh, this is really lovely - nice balance there yourself, of calm and tension. And rich polyphony of little details that really sell it. :D

I'm glad it turned out well--I had the idea in my head of what counterpoint meant musically, but I hadn't expected the other definitions to fit so well with what I had in mind. Thanks!

whichever it was, there be two of them

This really speaks to the heart of the matter, as do the ink and wine stains. Great use of your 100 words as well!
