I love almost every incarnation of Alice in Wonderland I've read/seen, from the sweet and quirky to the dark and bloody. There are a ton of them. (I'm also pretty wide open on shipping within said stories as long as Alice is of reasonable age, though I'm not so keen on Alice/Tarrant [Hatter] in the 2010 film.) Something about the story really interests me. It's an ordinary girl learning to navigate a completely illogical social system and environment, meeting strange people who don't conform to her ideas of how people should behave. Alice first explores, then learns to work within the system, then bucks it completely when it condemns her unjustly. It offers a great opportunity for social commentary and I think the best of the reincarnations take advantage of that.
Alice stories I like:
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) Lewis Carroll
Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) Lewis Carroll
Alice in Wonderland (1951) Disney animated film
Alice in Wonderland (1966) BBC live action film, dir. Jonathan Miller
Alice Through the Needle's Eye: a third adventure for Lewis Carroll's Alice (1984) Gilbert Adair - his writing follows the original style very well
Alice in Wonderland (1999) NBC live action film, dir. Nick Willing
Alice in Wonderland (2007) opera, Unsuk Chin & David Henry Hwang
The Looking Glass Wars novel series and tie-in comic books Hatter M (2004-2009) Frank Beddor
Heart no Kuni no Alice/Alice in the Country of Hearts (2008-present) manga, Soumei Hoshino
Wonderland (2008) comic, Tommy Kovac & Sonny Liew
The newish Batwoman storyline that uses quotes from the original Alice for one of her major antagonists
Pretty much all the one-off manga or anime episodes that have a Wonderland theme
Alice in Wonderland (2010) live-action film, dir. Tim Burton
I've collected various fanart pieces in my DeviantArt account from a whole bunch of talented artists.
I also have a guilty fondness for Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland (2003) manga, CLAMP, because it's awesome to see all the characters as women and yay lesbians but it's so very very very rapey/sexual harassment city that it makes me sad and uncomfortable at the same time.
(Dear CLAMP, lesbians don't have to be predatory. While it's lovely to see sexuality variation, you fail at queer people pretty consistently. Thank you for your time.)

Date: 2012-10-28 03:58 pm (UTC)The big warning with the Hentai aspect is they cover pretty much *all* the bases at one time or another with the exception or vore and guro. That being said, the vast majority of the sex is of the happy, consensual variety and when it isn't it serves the story and characters' development. Surprisingly deep for Hentai and well worth the read IMO.

I've been meaning to watch this forever, and just haven't gotten around to it. Started it, and decided it was a little weirder than I was in the mood for at the time (I was at my mom's house, watching it in the living room, and didn't feel like explaining.
