SO, I HAVE A MEME FROM
_samalander :
1. COMMENT WITH A MYSTERIOUS COMMENT OF YOUR CHOICE.
2. I will give you a letter.
3a. Post the names of five fictional characters [starting with that letter] and your thoughts on each.
3b. Post the titles of five songs [starting with that letter] and your thoughts on each.
L, R
Leonard H. McCoy - He's grumpy and snarky and angry, but in the end, Bones is ultimately a good person. He's intensely moral. I think my mental picture doesn't really match TOS Bones all the way, because there were some definitely unpleasant speciesist (racist) tones to him, but I'm really thinking Reboot Bones is different there. He has trouble understanding the p.o.v. of people who just don't think like humans, I can go with that... I'm looking forward to seeing more of him in the next movies.
Lee Jordan - Lee is my favorite minor character in Rowling-verse and he doesn't even get much characterization until pretty far into the series. He's funny and clever and smart-mouthed and very much a boy, but he can take things seriously as well. Lee's role during the war is very removed from the Trio and the Order's frontline troops, but so important. He's the voice of hope and strength. It would be interesting to explore that more.
Remus J. Lupin - Remus, on the other hand, is my favorite Marauder... Here's this kid who's had to deal with assault that leads to this incredibly traumatic illness he has to order his entire existence around, for the rest of his life. He has to be in control and incredibly careful at all times and he still might end up in a situation where he kills someone. That must have been incredibly isolating. I think that's in large part the reason he ended up as such a good scholar and teacher - a lonely, intelligent kid could very easily turn to books. They're friendly, controllable, and he can't hurt anybody in them. (So yeah, that's my pre-Hogwarts Remus analysis.) Also, totally see him as gay or bi and shagging Sirius. I did not buy Remus/Tonks at alllll.
Abhorsen Lirael - Action librarian. Yesssss... She's awesome and want to be her (before she's Abhorsen, actually). Lirael works in a library that's partially alive, where strange creatures (not teenagers, strange non-human creatures) lurk in the depths and a sword at your belt is as much a tool of everyday life as the filing system. She's dark-haired and gawky and feels out of place and enjoys exploring the depths of written history.
Lucien, librarian of the Dreaming - Lucien is another minor character, the librarian for Dream in the Sandman comics. He's collected and quietly snarky and I want to know more of his story.
Remember When it Rained - Josh Groban
This is from "Closer," one of the first CDs I ever owned. It showcases his voice wonderfully and to this day makes me all happy fuzzy at his smooth, warm vowels and crisp consonants. (I'm a singer; that kind of thing is intoxicating.) This song (and the rest of the CD) really remind me of trips back and forth to Minnesota on Amtrak, especially coming into the outskirts of the Twin Cities.
Red and Black - Les Miserables
Marius is such a prat, MY GOD. I spend the whole musical (AND book) wanting him to shut up and GTFO. I really like the rest of Les Amis de l'ABC and like this showcase of their voices and the beginning of the revolution. It's one of my favorite musicals and I've never even seen a full performance. The counter-melodies are amaaazing.
Resurrection - Leslie Fish and Joe Bethancourt
This is an SCA fighter's song basically about the joys of war, albeit by talking about the less pleasant aspects - "The sun on the armor and the flying dust and straw!" - but the cheerful continuing (Resurrection) is really what it comes down to. It may be hot and dusty, but as soon as you can get up off the ground and back to the resurrection point, you're back in the fray because it's so much fun!
Radiation Man - Sara Hickman
I love this song. It's like an old b-list scifi movie and it's adorable and morbid and funny. Sara Hickman has so much fun with her music, I love it. I found this CD at the library in high school. Also, Jim Kirk would enjoy this song. Not only does it involve humorously ill-fated interspecies romance, it ends in nudity.
Rusty D-con-STRUCK-tion - Ashley MacIsaac
Punky rock fiddle music from Canadian artist Ashley MacIsaac. It's not my favorite of his (those are Wing-Stock and Sleepy Maggie), but one of my go-to songs for energetic get-out-and-go staying-awake instrumental music.
