Author's note:  Thank you fic for [livejournal.com profile] tygati , for the lovely postcards she sent me!  Just came into my head and has been floating around...  I hope you like Sander.

Now, the ways these things are supposed to go, I really should be harboring some deep-seated, longstanding longing for my best friend.  He’s handsome, a dark-haired, blue-eyed melancholic hero of poetic mien.  I’m fond of him, of course.  I wouldn’t be following him around on his endless questing if I weren’t.  But in unrequited love?  Pffh.  Not in a hundred years.  Michael Gervais is a nobleman’s youngest son, I, the red-haired Sander Fisher, his gamekeeper’s eldest lad.  (Well. I say lad...  I certainly was when we started our journeying, a fresh-faced eighteen.  That was some nine years gone, though, and I fancy myself a man of the world now.)  Me?  I’m perfectly happy for him to have his misty moonings over Lady Ysabeau, his would-be betrothed.  Mic’s happier when in a fit of romantic melancholy, I think.  It makes him feel impressive.  I take my own pleasures and there are plenty of clever bards, strong blacksmith’s apprentices, and sweet stable men to share them.  Nah.  Whoever thinks it’s something between Gervais and I is dead wrong.  We’re friends.  I don’t talk too long about my fun in the haylofts and he doesn’t practice his awful poetry at me.  It works.
