Things that are

Thoughts on things, mini-rants, mini-squees, et cetera.

RL:

Internet is temporarily byebye - the neighbors finally decided to password-protect their wi-fi, so I'm working on finding a new hookup. I may be forced to actually pay for it, ohnoes! In the meantime, I'm camped out in the computer lab.

No summer job as yet. Crap. Tried to get one yet? Noooot really. >_>

I'm getting lots of reading and due South re-watching done though...

Went to library conference - lots of fun. I was a convenor and ran the session one of my professors (a children's librarian) held. She ended up giving me two finger puppets as thank yous. I have finally named them after a week of ownership. They are Dee, a very fluffy yellow chick, and Cassius, a snail.

Fandom/fanfic:

Has the Mary-Sue/PPC furor died down yet? I hope so.

I am...so far behind on Doctor Who. I just can't muster up the impulse to go search out the new ones. Also, re above, lack of internet.

Kate Thompson's a very good YA author. I read her Switchers trilogy in high school and just found two modern fantasy books set in Kinvarra, on the Burren - The New Policeman and Last of the High Kings. I recommend them - very quick reads.

Star Trek
My Kink Is Not Your Kink, in action.
Daddykink makes me sick to my stomach, as does fetishization of youth, especially when Chekov is involved. Yes, he's a bit younger than the rest of them. He is still a Starfleet officer, a member of what is essentially a military force. I am by no means saying that military folks aren't allowed to have infantilization fetishes, but...I still ought to be able to tell that there's an officer there. Note to self: watch warnings and Do Not Read these fics, even when they're rare pairings that you otherwise like. You will NOT like them and they will creep you the hell out.

I have a fic prompt for a Winona story, a pic that I saw first on weheartit.com (love that site, it's awesome). I will write this!
Saturday morning, before the sun rose, Winona pulled on the yellow sweater that was almost-but-not-quite command gold (her favorite, George's favorite) and checked to see that the boys were still asleep. She grabbed Ti's walking stick, clicked her tongue for Mol, and closed the door quietly behind her.

DC & Marvel
Loving Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. I need to find more comics of them, they are adorkable.

Teen Titans cartoons are cute. I've got the Season 2 DVDs on hold at the library. Aqualad = So Gay, Seriously. It's interesting to watch them from a background of reading the old comics. Robin said something to Cyborg along the lines of "Who says you get to be a Titan anyway?" and I'm sitting there going "...uh. HE'S ONE OF THE FOUNDERS AND HIS MONEY BUILT A LOT OF THE TOWER, DUH." Also, Emmy assures me that Robin is Dick, not Tim, which okay, but will have to see more.

Apparently Tim was originally supposed to be Asian-American, which explains some of the artist's renditions. They should have stuck with it. It'd be nice to have more Asian-coded people in a comics universe that aren't just "Visiting Japanese/Chinese/Taiwanese/Korean Hero #16" who goes home after a story-arc. Let's hear it for diversity WITHIN the US, people. The only first- or second-stringer I can think of off the top of my head is Marvel's Jubilee. I'm a little out of date, though, so I may be missing some.

Shatterstar and Rictor are CANON! FINALLY! It's only been oh, DECADES. *does victory dance* Awesome AU fancomic in progress starring those two in X-Force's answer to CSI, Mutant Crimes Investigation Unit. http://joasakura.deviantart.com/gallery/?24020305#X-Force-MCIU

Re: Infantilization- It bugs the hell out of me that every Chekov fic in fandom now has everyone clamoring to bang Chekov because he's so young. Yes, I can imagine there are people on the Enterprise who are attracted to Chekov, just like there are those attracted to Sulu, to Scotty, to Spock, to Uhura, to Bones, and to Kirk. And to everyone else on the Enterprise too, it's a community of people who live together and are around each other a lot. I physically flinch any time I read a line in a fic or even at ST_D where Sulu says that he didn't think he had a chance with Chekov because Chekov could have his pick of partners.

*nods* This. There are several fics I like specifically because they actually take longer looks at some of these tropes and work them differently. But Jeeez, I get so sick of the youth fetish stuff.

I knoooow. And it's actually starting to put me off Chekov in general, and the Chekov/Sulu side of fandom. Because it's just ridiculous.

I'm sticking with, just because I do like some of the stuff that's being done with the character, but I'm having to be a lot more careful about reading warnings and crap, because ew.

The thingy on metafandom? Someone linked me to that the other day, was interesting.

It's been making the rounds. Anti-PPC groups calling down the wrath of god for victimization of young women's creativity, the PPC responding with WTF, etc. I'm pretty sure Nazis have come up several times (from both sides), so really, it's degenerated past useful discussion.

Bleh. While I fundamentally agree that the PPC is questionable at best and seems to often toe into cyber-bullying (sorry love... er... well.. kinda... I guess I don't need to apologize for disagreeing with you...), whenever an argument detours into OMG Nazis I roll my eyes.
